We have all been there. You find a rig that is perfect for your life in Wyoming, and you just want to get the keys and get out on the road. But a car loan is a big commitment, usually lasting five or six years. Taking ten minutes to ask yourself a few tough questions now can save you years of financial stress later.
At Sunlight Federal Credit Union, we want our members to be in the driver’s seat of their finances. Here are four things to think about before you sign on the dotted line.
- Can I afford the “Total” monthly cost?
The loan payment is just the start. You also have to think about insurance, fuel, and maintenance. If you are moving from a small car to a heavy-duty truck, your fuel and tire costs are going to jump. Don’t forget about upfront sales tax (4-6% in Wyoming on new vehicles) and annual registration fees. These are often overlooked expenses that can catch borrowers off guard. Make sure there is still room in your budget for groceries and gear after all the truck-related bills are paid.
- Is the loan term too long?
Dealers often try to push 84-month or even 96-month loans because they make the monthly payment look small. But a seven or eight-year loan means you will likely owe more than the car is worth for a long time. At Sunlight FCU, we recommend finding the shortest term you can comfortably afford to save yourself thousands in interest.
- Am I getting a “Western Values” interest rate?
As a not-for-profit credit union, Sunlight FCU puts member benefits first. This means our auto loan rates are designed to keep more money in your pocket. Currently, our new auto rates start as low as 5.49% Annual Percentage Rate. Unlike traditional banks and for-profit lenders, we return our earnings to members through competitive rates and lower fees. When you finance with Sunlight FCU, you’re choosing a partner that’s focused on your financial well-being, not maximizing profits.
- Do I have a “Plan B” for the loan?
Life in Wyoming can be tough on a vehicle. If your rig is totaled in an accident, your standard auto insurance only pays you what the car is worth at that moment, not what you still owe on the loan. This is where GAP (Guaranteed Asset Protection) comes in. It helps cover that “gap” so you aren’t left paying for a car you can no longer drive.
To see why this matters, let’s look at two common Wyoming scenarios:
The Deer on the Highway: Imagine you just bought a new SUV. Six months later, you hit a deer on a dark stretch of highway and the vehicle was totaled. Because of depreciation, your insurance company says the car is now worth significantly less than what you paid. They send a check for the current value, but you still owe thousands more on your loan. Without GAP, you have to come up with the difference out of your own pocket just to close out the loan on a wrecked car.
Black Ice on the Pass: You are driving over a mountain pass in November and hit a patch of black ice. Your truck slides into a guardrail and is a total loss. If you didn’t put a large down payment on the truck, there is a good chance you owe more than its current market value. GAP protection would step in here to help cover that remaining balance, allowing you to start fresh with a new loan for a replacement vehicle without carrying over as much old debt.
The Member-Owner Advantage
If you buy GAP protection at the dealership, it is often rolled into your loan at a high price, sometimes several hundred dollars or more. At Sunlight FCU, we offer the same protection for a much lower, one-time fee. Plus, our GAP coverage includes $1000 Deductible Assistance that can help cover up to your insurance deductible amount if your vehicle is totaled. It is a common-sense way to protect your investment.
You do not have to figure this out alone. One of the best perks of being a Sunlight FCU member is that you can always come in and talk to a real person. We will look at the numbers with you and give you an honest opinion on whether a loan or an add-on is a good deal or not.
