Financial scams are getting more sophisticated every year, and scammers don’t care whether you live in Cody, Sheridan, Powell, or Worland, they’re targeting everyone. At Sunlight Federal Credit Union, keeping your accounts and personal information safe is something we take seriously. Here’s what you need to know to stay one step ahead.
The Most Common Scams Targeting You Right Now
Phishing Emails and Texts – You receive a message that looks like it’s from a company you trust, asking you to click a link or share sensitive information like your account number or password. These messages almost always create a sense of urgency, saying your account has been compromised or a payment failed. Sunlight FCU will never ask for sensitive personal information through email or text. If something feels off, call us directly at your local branch.
Impersonation Scams – Scammers pretend to be from government agencies, well-known companies, or even your credit union’s fraud department. They’ll say there’s suspicious activity on your account and pressure you to move your money. Remember, if anyone tells you to transfer funds to a “secure account,” move money into cryptocurrency, or deposit cash at a Bitcoin ATM to protect it, that’s a scam. No legitimate financial institution will ever ask you to do this.
Tech Support Scams – Someone calls claiming your computer is infected and asks for remote access or payment for fake software updates. If you didn’t initiate the contact, hang up. Take your computer to a local repair shop if you’re concerned.
Fake QR Codes – Scammers place fake QR code stickers over real ones in public places. When scanned, they redirect you to fraudulent websites. Always check for tampered stickers and only scan codes at trusted establishments.
Warning Signs That Something Is a Scam
Urgency or pressure – demanding immediate action or threatening consequences like account closures or arrest.
Unusual payment requests – gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or cash pickups are almost always fraud.
Unknown contact info – the number or email doesn’t match the organization it claims to represent.
Too-good-to-be-true offers – guaranteed returns, prizes you didn’t enter to win, or deals with no strings attached.
When in doubt, slow down. Scammers rely on creating a sense of urgency to get you to act quickly. Taking a moment to pause is one of the best defenses you have.
Don’t wait until something happens. Build these habits today:
Use multi-factor authentication (MFA) – for an extra layer of security.
Create strong, unique passwords – And don’t reuse them across sites. A password manager can help.
Keep your software updated – those notifications often include critical security patches.
Monitor your accounts regularly – a regular review of your accounts and setting up account alerts helps keep you informed of activity.
If you notice suspicious activity or think you’ve fallen for a scam, act fast:
1. Contact Sunlight FCU immediately so we can help secure your account and dispute unauthorized transactions.
2. Freeze your credit reports with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
3. Change your passwords for email, online banking, and any compromised accounts.
4. Report the incident to the FTC at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/ or the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at https://www.ic3.gov/.
